Concerto for Flute and Orchestra

Now published by United Music Publishing Limited, the Wilkinson Concerto for Flute and Orchestra premiered in 1997 with soloist, Karen Evans. A special commission from Owen Clarke and the newly formed UK community orchestra of Sherborne, this substantial contribution to the genre has a duration of 22 minutes in 3 movements. The work features many orchestral solos as well as supporting the solo flute.

Description

The tonal work is based on a rising three-note motif and its mirror image. The music moves from dark, muted beginnings through an agitated main section before closing the first movement in ominous repose. The second movement is lyrically romantic with chromatic fourth, passus duriusculus harmonies and includes several orchestral solos. A dark, pastoral cadenza is heard before echoes of the motif close this central movement. The spirited finale includes jazz-infused elements in Latin-American Tresillo rhythms with melodic themes and harmonies all founded on the principal motif. Following a tranquil interlude among large-scale orchestral passages, the work ends triumphantly with fanfare and flourish.

Piano Reduction

Complete with solo flute part, the composer’s own piano reduction is available from UMP Ltd.

The version for flute and piano is suitable for not only for performance preparation but also for solo recitals, LTCL recital diploma examination and chamber concerts.
